Waterwise Landscaping in the Okanagan and Kettle Valley

This award-winning xeriscape garden in Kelowna is an excellent example of waterwise landscaping

It’s that time of the year when the Okanagan weather is making a change for the better and our attention turns to the dingy grass and dirt that is still weeks away from looking lively. Gardening season is now just around the corner, though for landscaping enthusiasts, it may have already begun.

In Kelowna, months of hot summer sun with little rain creates unique challenges for gardeners and those who wish to be eco-conscious. Flat grassy areas will ideally need a professional irrigation system installed to help with plant health while minimizing water waste. When it comes to plants and flowers however, that’s when the fun really begins.

Xeriscaping is a form of gardening that encourages homeowners to eliminate supplemental water from irrigation. It’s a practice that makes use of native plant species and those that are well suited to the natural climate. Not only does this reduce your water use, it also saves you time.

In Kelowna, there are a number of beautiful examples of xeriscape gardens and there is even an organization called the Okanagan Xeriscape Association who promote and teach xeriscape gardening to those in the area.

The Okanagan Xeriscape Association has an excellent database that can help you select the perfect plants for your yard, including ornamental grasses, flowers, and even trees. Some of our favourites include:

  • Grape Hyacinth
  • Allium Giganteum
  • Rosa ‘Nearly Wild’
  • Silver Frost Lavender
  • Blue Cushion Lavender
  • Calamagrostis 'Karl Foerster'

Of course, gardening is another great way to make your home stand out from the rest and increase your curb appeal. What could be nicer than coming home to the beautiful scent of lavender and bright poppies to greet you?
